How To Not Damage Your Rep

This is probably a situation that you or at least someone you know is familiar with, I would think: There was nothing wrong with my friends used laptop. It was old and knackered and a bit bigger than the modern laptops that have come out in the last two years, but so what I said, it works perfectly fine doesn’t it? Surely that doesn’t mean you have to dump it and waste the money on another one? This was when the argument started: she started telling me how I was just dumb because I didn’t get it – If I got it then I would have understood, so in a way she was right as I did not in any way understand – and that I was of the old-school mentality.
At this point I had to leave the room: nothing hurts the pride of a man who secretly considers himself of the old-school mentality than to be outed as one in such a fashion (I had never told her I was of this mentality, and the fact that she had found me out also unnerved me and made we want to both run and wet my trousers). I came back and presented my argument again, this time going for the “you’re damaging the environment” angle (in that she would be needlessly adding more plastic to the growing global pile. It was a slim argument on the knife edge of legitimacy but it appeared to work, because she told me she now felt much too guilty to buy a new flashy laptop.
Thus, my job was done; I had helped the environment and also taken her mind off me being of the old school mentality and spreading the word and damaging my reputation!
